04 / FIELD NOTES

A few things
worth hearing.

01Two channels don’t always mean stereo.

A stereo file can contain two identical channels. That’s dual mono: two channels, one signal. Our dual-mono reference has identical samples on both sides. The channel-check file makes the change from left to right explicit. Headphone settings, accessibility options and a mono output can change what reaches your ears.

02A sample rate is a file fact.

The sample rate describes samples per second. Bit depth describes the precision of integer samples. A player or operating system may resample for playback, so its output rate is not necessarily the file’s rate. The inspector reads the source WAV header and checks that its byte rate and audio frames agree.

03A complete download is a better start.

A filename and a successful connection don’t prove that every byte arrived. Download & verify checks the ZIP’s length and SHA-256 against the published reference. The included SHA256SUMS.txt lets you check the individual WAVs too. A matching hash checks integrity against that reference; it is not an independent signature of the publisher.

Make room for
a clearer handoff.

TONE PARCEL

Small by design.

Tone Parcel is an independent browser workbench for reference audio and WAV file checks. The five reference signals are original, mathematically generated samples, not music or field recordings.

You may use, modify and redistribute the supplied audio for any purpose, including commercial work, without attribution. Files are supplied as-is, without warranty. This is not a hearing test or a calibrated measurement of your playback equipment.

PRIVACY

Your files stay yours.

The WAV inspector reads the selected file on your device. It does not upload the file or its name, contents or checksum. Clear file discards the inspection; leaving the page releases the browser’s working data.

This page uses no analytics, advertising, cookies, accounts or browser storage. Requests for page assets, reference audio and the ZIP reach the web server; ordinary access logs may include your IP address, time and requested URL.

No microphone access is requested. Playback begins only after you choose to listen.
